  11. If you have registered MR/2 ICE and are not receiving my release 
  12. announcements, please write and report you e-mail address, name and
  13. serial number.  You may have changed email addresses.  If you registered
  14. with BMT or OS/2 Shareware BBS in the "early days", your address may have
  15. been lost or never reported (the BBS never asked for it until recently).

  22. Registrations are taking no more than a week to turn around.  If you don't
  23. get your key within this timeframe, please (you guessed it :) write.  I 
  24. often have keys bounce, and the address I entered matches that provided 
  25. on the forms.  I have no recourse until you write me!

  27. Finally, the NEWSREADER addon to MR/2 ICE is progressing nicely.  I plan
  28. at least one more expansion, where I add beta testers.  Maybe more  When
  29. I add a group, we are testing the setup and initial user reaction.  At
  30. this time, I am only accepting REGISTERED USERS as potential testers.

  34. o   Keyboard fixups and changes relating to the SOURCE and REPLY window
  35.     hotkeys.  Was interfering with the use of ALT-4 and ALT-6 to enter
  36.     hi-end ASCII.
  37.     
  38. o   Removed the case where too many charset translations were performed 
  39.     when replying to messages with hi-end ASCII in subject.  Previously,
  40.     the reply subject would lose the characters.
  41.     
  42. o   Spacebar will now "page through" the current folder's messages, one
  43.     screen at a time, switching to the NEXT message when at the end of
  44.     the current.  I'll add a configuration for "direction".  Still may 
  45.     need an adjustment so as to minimize wastfull end-of-message
  46.     displays of a single non-text line.
  47.     
  48. o   You may now sort messages lists by SIZE.
  49.  
  50. o   FILTER->Special should finally work as claimed in the last release :)
  51.  
  52. o   Some menu mnemonics changed to avoid collision.
  53.  
  54. o   Environment variables are set with message-context information for
  55.     ALL external Rexx invocations.  Msgutil.org has examples of how to
  56.     get to pre-parsed pieces of message data.
  57.     
  58. o   Header alignment (when not displaying header) should be much more 
  59.     accurate.  No more parts of header showing because long header lines
  60.     are wrapping.
  61.     
  62. o   The internal message viewer (designated by a viewer of "*" in 
  63.     MIME association settings) now opens the message in SOURCE mode, so
  64.     it may be replied-to.
  65.     
  66. o   Appledouble attachment viewing now formats the part to display 
  67.     correctly.
  68.     
  69. o   Mailto.exe has now switched to another large SMTP server for its
  70.     default.  IBM Advantis placed security on their server so that
  71.     non ibm.net users cannot use it.
  72.     
  73. o   Minor security issues added.  Very few will ever see evidence of 
  74.     these.
  75.     
  76. o   As usual, I know there are more, probably minor issues, but I don't
  77.     have a record of them.
  78.     
  79.  
  80. Changes included in v1.28
  81. -------------------------
  82. I consider this a hopefully-final "pre-1.3" release.  Enough changed
  83. that I'll watch for new issues before calling it v1.3.
  84.  
  85. o   Clipboard History / Manager.  The PASTE menus now contain up to
  86.     5 of the previous copy/cuts since MR/2 ICE was started.  While
  87.     running, MR/2 ICE can record cut/copy from ANY application.  
  88.     However, the history is private to within MR/2 ICE and is reset
  89.     on each restart.
  90.                     
  91. o   NETSCAPE interfacing.  Options->Settings->Advanced now offers
  92.     the chance to control a running instance of Netscape, if this
  93.     is your browser of choice.  You may load a selected URL into
  94.     Netscape's main window, or request a secondary window (still 
  95.     within the same instance) to be opened.
  96.                     
  97. o   Copy to folder bug.  If the same message is somehow sent
  98.     to the same folder twice, the original copy's index entry would
  99.     incorrectly record the folder's collision-adjusted file name.
  100.     In other words, two copies would end up in the folder, the second
  101.     copy with a newly generated unique name.  That name would also
  102.     get recorded in the inbox (for example), where the file was
  103.     NOT renamed.  This would result in:
  104.                             
  105.     -   The message reporting a "MR/2 ICE file system error"
  106.         when opened.
  107.                     
  108.     -   Deletions would remove the index entry but fail to find the
  109.         matching message file (not reported to the user). A later
  110.         reindex would show the original message.  This would appear
  111.         as if the message was "lost" and never seen.  Not so.
  112.                             
  113.     While not actually a loss of data, this bug was confusing and 
  114.     confidence-shaking.  The algorithm has been changed and the 
  115.     original message file name preserved.
  116.                 
  117. o   %Z variable in templates will now equate correctly to the header
  118.     date's timezone.  This variable is always replaced by a numeric
  119.     (signed) value, and the attempts to offer text literal values
  120.     (e.g., "EST") have been ceased.
  121.                 
  122. o   Filter - Special.  Did I list this before?  The list of special
  123.     criteria is now represented as CHECKBOXES instead of radio
  124.     buttons.  IOW, you can check for multiple special circustances
  125.     in a single filter.
  126.                 
  127.     Disposition screen now has longer textual descriptions of choices.
  128.  
  129.  
  130. Changes included in v1.27
  131. -------------------------
  132. This is the worst I've been at documenting bug fixes.  All of the
  133. below from memory; the big ones are easy to recall.  There may be
  134. more smaller fixes included, but forgotten.
  135.  
  136. o   Mr2i.exe has been radically reworked and a new DLL, mr2i.dll, 
  137.     contains most of the working code.  This allows other DLL's to 
  138.     access the MR/2 ICE base code.  It also has the side benefit of 
  139.     allowing secondary copies of MR/2 ICE to load more quickly.
  140.     
  141.     MR2I.EXE is around 10k in this release.
  142.     
  143. o   Phrases. A phrase subsystem has been added.  You can save 
  144.     frequently needed snippets of text as a "phrase" and insert it 
  145.     into any future message quickly.  Inserting a phrase can be 
  146.     performed via the dynamic message INSERT menu or via a short 
  147.     series of keystrokes that identify the phrases "tag".
  148.  
  149.     Utilities->Phrase Maintenace for general maintenance
  150.     
  151.     Edit->Add to phrases (adds marked block) 
  152.     
  153.     Insert->Phrase to call up a phrase via dialog box OR traverse
  154.         the cascading sub menu to access a subset via menu 
  155.     
  156.     Insert->Phrase by tag (CTRL-I) to access a phrase by tag.
  157.     
  158.     So, for example, I want to insert a 3 paragraph blurb about a 
  159.     recent price increase; something I do often.  I use to open a 
  160.     folder used specifically for snippets of frquently used text, 
  161.     find the message, open it, mark/copy, close, go back to the 
  162.     original message, paste.  Now, all is required (once the phrase 
  163.     is saved) in my case is to type: CTRL-I "price" ENTER.
  164.  
  165. o   RMB->Pack is available on the folder menu.  This simply spawns a
  166.     REXX script (provided) called "pack.cmd" passing the specifics of
  167.     each highlighted folder.  This script depends on the existence of
  168.     ZIP.EXE in your path (modify the script to suit).
  169.     
  170.     MR/2 ICE can now officially archive folder contents into zip files,
  171.     but still extract these for viewing on demand.  NOTE that there are
  172.     many restrictions to what can be done with a packed folder (for 
  173.     example, you can't reindex it).  Archiving is for non-volitale,
  174.     mostly-read-only folders.  It *can* save a ton of disk space.
  175.     
  176.     All messages are zipped into a file called messages.dat, and the
  177.     folder.ndx file remains visible.  MR/2 ICE handles the extraction
  178.     of each message as needed.
  179.     
  180.     NOTE: please do not start too many folder packers at one time. While
  181.     it is possible to spawn dozens at the same time, system performance
  182.     will suffer.  Please try one or two at a time.
  183.     
  184.  
  185. o   Command Line: /O was refined and improved.  It now accepts up to 
  186.     three parameters:
  187.     
  188.         mr2i /Obad.msg "This is the reason" "Bad Message!"
  189.         
  190.     The above example loads the file "bad.msg" into an active 
  191.     message editor window.  It then pops up a message box with the 
  192.     text specified as parameter 2 and the title of parameter 3.  If 
  193.     parameter 3 is not specified, the title "NOTE!!" is used.  If 
  194.     parameter 2 is not specified, no message box is displayed.
  195.  
  196. o   Command Line: /Q was refined and improved.  It is now much more 
  197.     sensitive to collisions (files being queued from more than once 
  198.     session at the same time).    
  199.  
  200. o   Accelerators and Keyboard.  The keyboard and accelerator 
  201.     interface has been vastly improved.  A few stray problems 
  202.     remain, but a big improvement overall.
  203.  
  204. o   Filter Notebook.  Filter maintenance has been reworked to show 
  205.     all filters in a notebook layout for maintenance.  This will 
  206.     allow more room for addition of more "actions" (coming soon).
  207.  
  208. o   Menu. "Edit message externally" and "Edit file" have switched 
  209.     parent menus.  This may cause some short-term inconvenience, but 
  210.     is more intuitive in the long run.
  211.                                    
  212. o   Issues with changing accounts.  Tabs and window sizes would 
  213.     often get confused when switching accounts.  Fixed.
  214.     
  215.     Also, the first settings page was made to reuse an obsolete 
  216.     field. You can now control the text displayed when the "Display 
  217.     account name in titlebar" (Settings->Preferences) is specified.
  218.  
  219. o   Memory leaks.  While debugging the upcoming newsreader module, I 
  220.     found quite a few memory leaks.  While all were relatively 
  221.     minor, they could have become significant during prolonged use.  
  222.     Still looking!
  223.  
  224. o   RMB->ReplyTo.  You can now use RMB->Reply to in order to reply 
  225.     to the current message, using the address under the cursor as 
  226.     the recipient.
  227.  
  228. o   GroupMtc form - changes in video modes or cards should no longer 
  229.     interfere with the look of this form.
  230.  
  231. o   Address Book Maintenance keystrokes.  Experimental.  If you type 
  232.     a series of keyboard characters while viewing the AB pick list 
  233.     (Utilities->Address Book Maintenance), the system will try to 
  234.     match the string to a value.  The data to test depends on the 
  235.     current sort order; the sort column is matched.  For example, 
  236.     sorting on Real Name, typing in "J", "O", "H" then "N" will 
  237.     select the FIRST Real Name starting with "John".  The SPACEBAR 
  238.     resets the test string to empty.
  239.     
  240.     I played around with various ideas.  At first, I matched ANY 
  241.     text that you typed, but this was too generic.  Let me kniw what 
  242.     you think.
  243.  
  244. o   Queued messages not all being sent.  A bug in outbound filters 
  245.     would often interfere the the sending queue.  The bug was 
  246.     non-destructive, but did result in message having to be manually 
  247.     requeued for sending.
  248.  
  249. o   Insert email address.  The INSERT menu now has an entry for 
  250.     inserting an email address from the address book.
  251.  
  252. o   Reply-to-all now makes an attempt to exclude the current user
  253.     as a recipient.
  254.     
  255.  
  256. Changes included in v1.25 and v1.26
  257. -----------------------------------
  258. More bug fixes and enhancements including but not limited to:
  259.  
  260. o   Command line: /H flag can be specified.  This causes MR/2 to
  261.     change its path to where mr2i.exe is found.  This happens
  262.     immediately after program load.
  263.  
  264. o   Command line: /Ofilename can be used now to specify an existing
  265.     message file (properly formed as per RFC-822) to be automatically
  266.     opened on program load
  267.  
  268. o   Forwarding of multiple messages now prompts ONCE for only a single
  269.     address, then uses the default Forward template to forward each
  270.     selected message.
  271.  
  272. o   Filters: Forward Message is now functional
  273.  
  274. o   ICON change for replied messages.  Several icons donated by 
  275.     Keith Dombrowski <kdombrowski@mhv.net>, and I liked this one the
  276.     best.  Thanks Keith!
  277.  
  278. o   Detach on FAT drive fix.  Name mangler was removing all dots and 
  279.     turning them to "-"'s.  Forward slashes were also not converted
  280.     properly.
  281.  
  282. o   Several changes to the way the command line /Q option worked.  
  283.     this includes a synchronization between a runnning copy and a 
  284.     second invocation, where the second copy will not return until
  285.     the running copy has queued the message safely.
  286.  
  287. o   New utility test case: wrap.exe.  Provided to aid in on-demand 
  288.     PGP use.
  289.     
  290. o   Mailto.exe included in distribution zip.
  291.  
  292. o   Upgrade.txt now also included.
  293.  
  294. o   Miscellaneous changes to help with continuing newsreader 
  295.     development.

  297.  
  298. Changes included in v1.23 and v1.24
  299. -----------------------------------
  300. NOTE: v1.23 was a short-term stability beta.  v1.24 fixes some 
  301. additional bugs, plus addresses several minor issues introduced in the 
  302. v1.23 release.
  303.  
  304. I fixed many, many bugs as they were reported, and only in the last day 
  305. or two started to try to remember them so as to document these.  Outside 
  306. of changes related to the upcoming news client addition, the following 
  307. items are what I remember fixing:
  308.  
  309. o   /X on the command line will now tell a RUNNING copy to poll for mail.
  310.     
  311. o   Changing accounts will handle pop3 password changes/prompts better.
  312.  
  313. o   Multiple account FILTERS (those NOT using multiple accounts see no 
  314.     change). Filter files are now based on the account name. The default 
  315.     filter file for the MAIL account in in the MR/2 ICE "root".  
  316.     Secondary accounts now access an MR2I.FLT file in their base 
  317.     subdirectories.  More changes like this to follow to improve 
  318.     secondary account autonomy.
  319.  
  320. o   Cursor position after header edit AND/OR detach message is restored.
  321.  
  322. o   Open Attached directory now gives correct error messages.
  323.  
  324. o   Filters using REXX criteria checks are now passed a proper source
  325.     file name for foldered messages (when invoked "on demand").
  326.  
  327. o   Careful!  I changed the "find in index" search logic a bit, and it
  328.     took me a couple of days to get used to it.  When you do an index
  329.     "find", it now highlights ALL matches at one time, and scrolls to 
  330.     the first.  With this, it's an easy matter to find all messages
  331.     from "gates@microsoft.com" and RMB->DELETE them (or move, copy,
  332.     bounce, whatever).
  333.     
  334.     The danger lies in the fact that HUNDREDS of messages might be 
  335.     highlighted, but maybe only one is showing on current the page.
  336.     RMB->Delete gets all of them.  If you want the single messages,
  337.     always click on it once first, to select only it.
  338.     
  339.     I see the need for a marked-message count somewhere.
  340.  
  341. o   "Re:" is inserted in front of subjects (when replying) in a 
  342.     different part of the code and will be more consistent.
  343.     
  344. o   Progression meter will now display more reliably
  345.  
  346. o   If the "send now" checkbox is unchecked, the message will be marked
  347.     as "save now but don't send".
  348.     
  349. o   Pertainent index RMB menus now have Mark as->On hold (same as save
  350.     but don't send).
  351.     
  352. o   Quoted Printable display bug fixed for lines > 74 chars and "soft"
  353.     linefeeds.
  354.  
  355. o   Template $File lines are filtered for embedded variables before
  356.     being processed.
  357.     
  358. o   New template variable @UserPath@ will expand to the current account 
  359.     (which is also the default mail path).  This allows secondary 
  360.     profiles to include @UserPath@ in their templates to include unique 
  361.     sigs per account.  Templates making use of this should be sure to 
  362.     copy referenced file into the MAIL directory for the default user 
  363.     profile.
  364.     
  365.     Example template use, default reply template:
  366.     
  367.         $file:@userpath@\mr2i.sig
  368.         
  369.     Would include "mail\mr2i.sig" for the default user, "noone\mri2.sig"
  370.     for a profile labeled "noone", etc.,.
  371.     
  372.     More separation of account files coming ...
  373.     
  374. o   Attachment file names are converted to a FAT-compatible file name if 
  375.     found to be working on a FAT-only drive.  Hard for me to test, so 
  376.     let me know if any problems arrise.
  377.     
  378. o   Fixed yet-another bug when extracting BinHex file names.
  379.     
  380. o   Previously, in/out filters would end up tallying outgoing copies 
  381.     into a folder as a "new" message.  Fixed.
  382.     
  383. o   Quoting of previously quoted material will be much cleaner.  I broke 
  384.     this awhile back in the name of "efficiency", but now it's back to
  385.     the way it should work.
  386.     
  387. o   Some menu shortcut keystroke clashes have been fixed.
  388.  
  389. o   An example of a MIME Content-Type header > 512 bytes was provided 
  390.     (yikes!).  This would *previously* crash MR/2 ICE.  Fixed.
  391.     
  392. o   When a PreFetch filter that fetches headers-only exists and is 
  393.     enabled, REMOVE FROM SERVER AFTER FETCHED is totally ignored for 
  394.     safety.  Purging becomes a manual process, use Message->Purge from 
  395.     server.
  396.     
  397. o   On-demand REXX (CTRL-Fkey) is now called with many environment 
  398.     variables set with ready-to-use data.  The following information is 
  399.     passed this way:

  420. o   Address book can now be sorted via a RMB popup menu.  This menu
  421.     also contains selections to add, delete and edit entries.  More
  422.     items will be added ...
  423.     
  424. o   Prefetch filters would fetch headers, but there was usually trouble
  425.     getting the corresponding bodies.  Fixed.  Sorry!
  426.     
  427. o   Alt-W, write to file's file selection box works correctly now.
  428.  
  429. o   A move-to-folder now sets the archive bit of the file object.
  430.  
  431. o   Menu items are better enabled when a prefetch filter exists.
  432.  
  433. o   Timezone logic still did not correctly account for DST setting.
  434.     Should be fixed now!
  435.     
  436. o   MIME associations are now referenced when attaching files.  The
  437.     attachment will now acquire the Content-Type of a matching suffix,
  438.     if one is defined (e.g., a GIF will be marked as "image/gif").
  439.     Otherwise, when a filename suffix match is not defined, 
  440.     "application/octet-stream" is defaulted.
  441.     
  442. o   MIME configuration page has a new checkbox.  "Consider undefined 
  443.     MIME types as displayable text".  Defaults to OFF.
  444.     
  445. o   MIME mutipart attachments (like those dredded appledouble subtypes)
  446.     handling modified.  MR/2 ICE now explains your options when you try
  447.     to Message->Detach with one of these types.  It also will 
  448.     automatically invoke the internal viewer on these parts if
  449.     "detached" individually (same effect as "viewing").  This will
  450.     save a ton of support questions.
  451.     
  452. o   When detaching a part of an unknown encoding and unknown file name,
  453.     the system generated file name is correctly displayed.  Previously,
  454.     an empty list would display.
  455.     
  456. o   The advanced option to send a file as an attachment from the command
  457.     line was slanted towards the FAX interface.  The command line syntax
  458.     for this remains unchanged.  However, the following commands will
  459.     send a file as an attachment preserving the source file's name:
  460.     
  461.         mr2i /q:whatever.zip user@wherever.com "File for you!"
  462.         mr2i /q:*whatever.zip user@wherever.com "File for you!"
  463.         
  464.     The second form of the command sends the file uuencoded, while the
  465.     first form is the default of MIME/base64 encoding.
  466.     
  467. o   Rot13 is available from within the viewer (menu item is active).
  468.  
  469. o   If text is marked when replying, that text is quoted into the reply
  470.     regardless of the state of the "quote source message" global setting.
  471.     This allows for you to "usually NOT quote", but haveing a selection
  472.     quoted when you need.
  473.     
  474. o   Reediting a "save but don't send" message now send the correct,
  475.     modified version.  I'm embarassed and sorry for trouble caused by
  476.     this goof.  Also, this flag was not always persistent across loads.
  477.     IOW, if you'd exit and reload MR/2, the system would sometimes see
  478.     the message simply as an "unsent".  Fixed.
  479.     
  480. o   Redirected messages work better with "folded" TO lines ... 
  481.     addresses spanning multiple lines.  I also noted some formatting issues
  482.     where Resent-to and the other lines were not "folded" to look nicer.
  483.     Fixed.
  484.     
  485. o   Folder list may now be sorted by folder PATH.
  486.  
  487. o   The system COMPSEC setting is now used when launching external 
  488.     utilities.  Hopefully this won't break anything ...
  489.     
  490. o   The ATTACHED directory may now be opened as a WPS folder via the
  491.     Main notebook UTILITIES menu and also under the message 
  492.     viewer/editor MESSAGE menu.  More options and ideas yet to come ...
  493.     
  494. o   Notebook tab control.  Options->Tab attributes is now on the main
  495.     notebook menu.  You can control the height, width and font for the
  496.     main notebook.  In addition, a toggle controls where the tabs are
  497.     located; either on the bottom as you're used to, or on the right
  498.     side.  Tabs logic was reworked to remove major/minor tabs ... NEWS
  499.     will be "just another" minor tab on the main notebook, with groups
  500.     opening similarly to folders.
  501.     
  502. o   Load time page selection.  You may now load MR/2 ICE and have it
  503.     turn to one of the main notebook tabs when loaded.   Simply
  504.     invoke with /1 for the inbox (defaults there anyway), /2 for the
  505.     outbox and /3 for the FOLDERS index.
  506.     
  507. o   Shift-f10 is now available in the message editor/viewer to invoke
  508.     the context menu from the keyboard.  It also works from the 
  509.     header editing screen.  Still working on the index lists, but these
  510.     are strange beasts :).
  511.     
  512. o   Filter maintenance list screen now shows checkmarks for enabled
  513.     filters, empty boxes for those disabled.  Click on a checkbox in
  514.     the list to toggle this flag on/off.  No need to "edit" individual
  515.     entries if you simply wish to enable/disable.
  516.     
  517. o   A couple of new "dummy" DLL's are included.  The real ones represent 
  518.     work-in-progress, but these fill the void without adding the
  519.     bugs.

  522. Changes included in v1.2
  523. ------------------------
  524.  
  525. Mostly cleanup and solidification of previously added features and bug
  526. fixes.  Many new and exciting features have been added since v1.1.
  527. I'm not done yet.  I still have many items that have been on my todo
  528. list too long.  I will attempt to handle these in the next couple of 
  529. releases.  In addition, I have a couple of really great ideas that 
  530. will show up quickly.  Don't forget the integrated news reader.  This
  531. will be thr primary thrust for awhile.
  532.  
  533. o   Improvements to the single click/keystroke PASTE w/QUOTE feature
  534.     including extra linefeeds and focus changes.
  535.     
  536. o   MANUAL FETCH MODE:  To retrieve header-only entries in full, the
  537.     procedure it now that you highlight one/more entries and press
  538.     the FETCH toolbar icon (third from end) or Message->Poll for mail.
  539.     All marked "previewed" messages, if any, will be fetched before
  540.     a normal poll-for-new is performed.
  541.  
  542.     I stopped short of making manual mode selectable from the main menu.
  543.     I want to test the case of switching it on and off while polling
  544.     very thoroughly before depending on this.  Manual mode must be toggled
  545.     on/off from the Settings notebook at this time.
  546.     
  547. -   "Real-time" Help file improvements got pushed off, too.  I'm more 
  548.     excited about the web-based manual, although a bit slower right now.
  549.     I will end up incorporating this manual directly into the app, but
  550.     the job is bigger than I had guessed (matching ID's) and I have to
  551.     release to make a CD ROM release.

  554. NOTES ON THE WORKINGS OF PREVIEW MODE (HEADER-ONLY INDEX ENTRIES)

  557. When you turn on MANUAL / PREVIEW mode with your POP3 server, the system
  558. automatically fetches only headers for all new messages.  You can open
  559. these entries as if they were normal messages, and this might be handy
  560. if you need to examine the headers.  However, the more-common use of 
  561. header-only index entries is to allow selective fetching.
  562.  
  563. Header-only index entries will be marked with a round "dot" icon.
  564.  
  565. To fetch one or more full messages from a group of header-only entries, 
  566. simply MARK the desired items and invoke a pop3 poll (F2, 
  567. Message->Check for mail or third toolbar icon from the end).  All marked
  568. headers will be fetched first, then a normal poll for new headers will
  569. be performed.
  570.  
  571. Remove from Server mode is ignored when Manual Mode is selected.  To
  572. support this feature with POP3 servers that do NOT support the UIDL
  573. command, message counts are used, and deleting messages from the server
  574. would be risky.  Hence, in manual/preview mode, manual purges must be 
  575. performed periodically (Message->Purge from server).
  576.  
  577. The MANUAL/Preview Mode flag is set by going to Options->Settings.  
  578. On the first "network" page, in the POP3 groupbox is the "Manual mode"
  579. checkbox.
  580.  
  581.  
  582. PREFETCH FILTERS
  583. ================
  584.  
  585. Prefetch filters can be used in both Manual mode and "normal" mode to
  586. automatically and selectively control the fetching of messages in
  587. FULL or HEADER-ONLY mode.  The disposition of a prefetch-filtered message
  588. will stay true regardless of the POP3 read mode.  For instance, if a
  589. certain set of criteria defines a message to be fetched as "header only",
  590. only the header will result in either mode.  Alternatively, if a "full
  591. message fetch" filter is created, messages matching this criteria will
  592. always be retreived in full-body mode, regardless of the overall POP3
  593. fetch mode.
  594.  
  595. I use PreFetch filters on my system at home, where I have a dial-up
  596. connection.  The filter tells MR/2 ICE to only fetch headers when the
  597. message size is greater that 120,000 bytes.  This allows me to see all
  598. of my mail more quickly and easily identifies mail that is probably
  599. including attachments.  I then request to fetch these messages manually,
  600. but I am free to read and respond to all other messages in the meantime.
  601. Very handy.  And "mostly automatic".
  602.

  607. o   Preview/Manual mode fixed up for POP3 servers that do not

  630. I consider this release a beta, too.  I'm targeting 11/1 as a 
  631. release date for v1.2, but I'll happily push it back a couple of days
  632. if needed.

  634. o   POP3 manual mode can be specified.  In this mode, headers are 
  635.     fetched from the POP3 server but no bodies.  Index entries are 
  636.     inserted with a new icon.  The user can then pick and choose which 
  637.     full messages are fetched and when.
  638.     
  639. -   NOTE that this mode works ONLY with pop3 servers that support the
  640.     TOP command.  If the TOP command is not supported, MR/2 will fail
  641.     when fetching the first message.  No mail is fetched, but no mail
  642.     is lost, either, as turning off MANUAL mode will correct the 
  643.     problem.
  644.  
  645. -   BIGGER NOTE!  For those of you that have setup  MR/2 ICE so that
  646.     if fetches from multiple providers into a single MAIL directory
  647.     (by manually editing the INI file :), please DO NOT USE THIS FEATURE.
  648.     The uniqueness of message ID's is required, and mixing mail from
  649.     two ISP's and/or POP3 accounts will surely confuse things.
  650.                 
  651. o   PreFetch filters.  Filters that control the automated fetching of 
  652.     messages from the POP3 server.  Criteria can be defined based on a 
  653.     message's header and/or size.  If the criteria is matches, the user 
  654.     can specify to have fetch the full message, just the header, or to 
  655.     skip the message entirely.
  656.                       
  657.     There are two modes available.  When used in normal "non manual" 
  658.     mode, PreFetch filters can be used to specify message for which only 
  659.     the HEADERS are desired.  For example, messages from a certain user 
  660.     or over a specified size can be fetched in header-only mode, letting 
  661.     the user decide if/when to get the entire message.
  662.  
  663. o   In-Progress messages that *are not* ready to be sent can not be
  664.     saved into the outbox with assurance that it will not be sent.
  665.     Use Message->Save (but don't send).  The icon for these messages
  666.     will show as a paper and quill/pen.  A message can be "saved" any
  667.     number of times ... once you click on the SEND button, it gets
  668.     saved and sent.
  669.                         
  670. o   MR/2 ICE Ask-The-Experts(tm) Web Page!  Yet another way to get 
  671.     user-based help for what's already the best-supported OS/2 email 
  672.     available!  Simple web interface accepts and email address and 
  673.     question(s) from the user.  This is then emailed to a panel of MR/2 
  674.     ICE veteran users that have volunteered to share their knowledge.
  675.                     
  676. o   UUPC/UUCP drivers for MR/2 ICE are available.  This is a set of 
  677.     third-party Rexx scripts and a small EXE that, when used in 
  678.     conjunction with MR/2 ICE's new "custom mail driver" feature, allows 
  679.     the native reading and sending of UUCP-style email.  See the ICE web 
  680.     page for details and to ftp the latest version.
  681.

  685. o   Split-screen editor:  ghost split-slider removed when zooming a
  686.     message back to single window mode.  Also, splitter position 
  687.     is saved to the mr2ic.ini file as a percentage and used each

  691.     ALT-Q and the menu entry and icon for PASTE w/quote now will 
  692.     function in the message "view only" window to immediately and 
  693.     directly paste information to the reply window. In additon, the

  695.     quick and precise selection of the editor window.  Finally, 
  696.     Edit->Undo will function correctly after pasting w/quote.  NOTE that 
  697.     has a side effect, the clipboard afterwards holds an already-quoted 
  698.     copy of the original text.

  700.     NOTE that Paste w/quote will also work in full-screen mode, with a
  701.     reply active and while viewing the message portion.  The effects are
  702.     not immediately visible, though, until you switch back to the reply
  703.     window.

  705. o   MR/2 HELP menus now have links to various MR/2 web pages, including 
  706.     the home page, the FAQ and the Ask-The-Experts(tm) page.  An online 
  707.     web-based manual with SEARCH capabilites should be available soon.

  727. I consider this a BETA release of what will be v1.2.  Seems stable to 
  728. me, but TONS of low level code has been teaked and prodded.  Could
  729. be some instability in there, somewhere.  Be warned!
  730.  
  731. o   Folder-to-folder copying and moving performance improved. A move
  732.     is now a TRUE file system level move, with far less overhead
  733.     that the previous method of copying, then deleting.  Both copy
  734.     and move now steamline the updating of the target index file,
  735.     providing another large performance boast.  Still not perfect,
  736.     but loads better!
  737.     
  738. -   Also cleaned up some window painting issues that should help 
  739.     speed up things even more.
  740.  
  741. o   Added a "Use MIME by default flag" flag to the MIME page.  If 
  742.     checked, all dropped files will be MIME'd, and the default
  743.     Message-Attach file mode will be MIME.  Otherwise, the default 
  744.     for both is UUEncoding.

  746. o   Better handling of progression indicator when the pop3 server
  747.     does NOT return a message's file size up front.  Previously,
  748.     large messages would appear to start downloading quickly, then
  749.     "frieze" (often at 85% or so).  In fact, they were working, but
  750.     the 85% was based on 3000 bytes (a made-up default), and the 
  751.     progression metter would never update > 100% of 3000.  Now the
  752.     progress metter may STILL not indicate actual percentages, but
  753.     it will "bounce around" and continually update.  (Specifically
  754.     apparent with ISP's using PowerWeb pop server - e.g. os2bbs.com).
  755.     
  756. o   SENDS now connect with the SMTP/POP3 host once, send all messages,
  757.     *then* disconnect.  Previous, each message would cause a 
  758.     connect, send, disconnect.  No real problem for quick connections
  759.     to fast receiving hosts, but very time consuming to slower 
  760.     connections with mail hosts that do not "connect" quickly.
  761.     
  762. o   Custom "user programmable" Mail Drivers.
  763.  
  764.     New mail FETCH and SEND options in settings notebook ... CUSTOM.
  765.     This allows for user defined REXX procedures to be called to 
  766.     create the collection of incoming mail and to send each outgoing
  767.     message.  I can see this working for UUCP and even MHS formatted
  768.     message, and perhaps a whole lot more.  Here's how it works.
  769.     
  770.     Read mail via CUSTOM.  At the beginning of each poll for new mail, a 
  771.     rexx script called "getmail.cmd" is called from the base mail 
  772.     directory for the account.  For example, the initial/default account 
  773.     would call "mail\getmail.cmd".  After that, the system checks the 
  774.     defined SMTP delivery directory (change this path as desired) for 
  775.     new files, and these are recognized as new mail.  If an error 
  776.     occurs, a one-line message describing it should be stored in a file 
  777.     called "getmail.err" in the base mail directory.  This message is 
  778.     displayed to the user.  The absense of this file indicates a 
  779.     successful custom fetch.
  780.     
  781.     Send mail via CUSTOM.  For each message queued for sending, a rexx 
  782.     script called "postmail.cmd" is called from the base mail directory 
  783.     for the account.  For example, the initial/default account would 
  784.     call "mail\postmail.cmd".  The name of a temporary file housing the 
  785.     ready-to-send message is passed.  If an error occurs, a one-line 
  786.     message describing it should be stored in a file called 
  787.     "postmail.err" in the base mail directory.  This message is 
  788.     displayed to the user.  The absense of this file indicates a 
  789.     successful custom send.
  790.     
  791.     Custom Mail Drivers (CMD's? :) should start by deleting their 
  792.     respective error files, as these are preloaded by MR/2 ICE before
  793.     invocation with "REXX script not found" messages.
  794.  
  795. o   Long email addresses when saved to Address Book would sometimes
  796.     get chopped and corrupted.  We're talking *really long* addresses,
  797.     but even these work now.
  798.  
  799. o   Marking a URL for Web Browsing/FTP now uses only the marked portion.
  800.     Previously, marked section was ignored and the entire word/string
  801.     would be used as happens when nothing is marked.
  802.  
  803. o   New "Redirect" option on RMB Message Index menus.  Allows you to
  804.     quickly "bounce" messages to some other email address.  Message(s)
  805.     remain mostly unaltered ... some header lines are appended to 
  806.     allow for POP3 sending and to preserve original information.

  808. o   The default FORWARD template has been changed.  The new template 
  809.     will actually preceed each header line with a ">" to prevent strange
  810.     routing problems.

  812. o   New Options->Settings parameter to control the HEADER created for 
  813.     FORWARDED messages.  You can now specify whether, by default, your 
  814.     address goes into the Reply-To header, or the address of the 
  815.     original sender.

  817. o   Missing first char bug.  Often on resends and/or when working with
  818.     previously sent messages, the first character of the message
  819.     would get chopped.  Fixed.

  821. o   WarpUtil.DLL is now used to link in WPS features.  Since this causes
  822.     problems for OS/2 v2.xx users, an alternate DLL is provided.  For 
  823.     v2.xx users, you MUST copy "nowarp.dll" to "warputil.dll".

  825. o   Internal index changes.  Size is recorded in bytes.  An "o" is
  826.     placed after the size to differentiate it from the previous

  863.     This may warrant actually REMOVING MIME association definitions.
  864.     This will be a user's option; I will continue to try and improve
  865.     the default association file assuming external viewers.

  867. o   I changed the default "delete" flag for autoreplies to be OFF.
  868.     This means that autoreplies WILL NOT be automatically deleted 
  869.     after being sent.  This was somehow confusing the autoresponder
  870.     and some autoreplies were being lost.  This does not happen
  871.     in save-after-sent mode.  I may switch it back later, but until
  872.     I can find out what's happening and fix it, it will stay this way.

  929.     up-to-date.

  940. o   Login menu is now a conditional cascade and will list ALL AVAILABLE

  946. o   Reindexing of folders code was extremely inefficient, particularly
  947.     when the folder contained larger messages.  Rewrote this and it is
  948.     MUCH quicker.

  950. o   Modified the message saving and moving code to identify and wait 
  951.     for locked index files.  In my testing, I could not get MR/2 to 
  952.     drop an incoming messages nomatter how fast I moved through existing 
  953.     messages.  I believe I've knocked this one off, but I'll wait for

  956. o   I still had a problem with MIME character translations that came up
  957.     during the last 2 releases.  All seems to me back in order now.
  958.     Text decoded from Base64 was never checked for needed conversions,

  961. o   Wrapping of quoted text using the ALT-1-for-a-space mechanism now
  962.     works as it should.

  964. o   Sorting of index lists has been fixed.  Again.  Ah, the joys of
  965.     multithreaded programming!  One inbox function/thread would switch

  967.     I seem to have fixed this up ... another fix waiting for the test

  970. o   Demand filters are now functional, as is the RMB->Filters->Select

  973. o   Better reply-to and from address matching.  MR/2 now "normalizes"

  978.     real names.  A thought just popped into my mind ... does this

  1012. for MR/2 ICE ... you'll notice some new doc files resulting driectly from
  1013. them.  I will certainly acknowledge each individual, after I've checked
  1014. to make sure this is ok (don't know why it wouldn't be, but I'll play it
  1015. safe :).  Comments and/or suggestions are welcome.  See install.txt,
  1016. readme.1st and keys.txt.

  1018. o   Install zip now includes some new doc:  install.txt, keys.txt and
  1019.     readme.1st.  See readme.1st to find out what ALL TEXT FILES included
  1020.     with MR/2 ICE explain!

  1022. o   Fax-by-email support!!  MR/2 ICE now supports the transport of
  1023.     faxes and other PMFax-related documents via email, with the
  1024.     potential to save fortunes in long distance phone calls!  This
  1025.     feature will cooperate with the imminent release of PMFax v3.0.
  1026.     To support this feature, MR/2 ICE adds two new command-line
  1027.     capabilities ...
  1028.     
  1029. o   Command line parameter /D can be used as in this example:
  1030.  
  1031.         mr2i /Dmessagefile logfile
  1032.          
  1033.     and will load MR/2 ICE, detach all attachments found in the
  1034.     named message file.  A list of all detached files will be 
  1035.     found in the named logfile.  If no logfile is specified,
  1036.     the log is written to stdout.
  1037.     
  1038.     This is used in the faxrcv.cmd file included with MR/2 ICE
  1039.     for use with a link-to-Rexx filter.
  1040.     
  1041. o   Command line parameter /Q has been modified so that, if a space
  1042.     follows the /Q, a specific mode is invoked.  In this case, 3 parameters
  1043.     are expected:
  1044.     
  1045.         mr2i /Q filename address subject
  1046.         
  1047.     MR/2 ICE will create a new message to "address" (must be a valid 
  1048.     internet address, wrapped in quotes if it contains spaces) and with
  1049.     the given sibject (again, ""'s if spaces are included).  It then
  1050.     MIME encodes "filename" as an attachment and adds it into the
  1051.     outbox for sending.  If a copy MR/2 ICE is already running, that 
  1052.     copy will take over and send the message.  If no other copy is
  1053.     running, and MR/2 ICE is invoked as above, it will load the message
  1054.     into the outbox and exit.  To create the message, send and exit,
  1055.     without an existing running copy use:
  1056.         
  1057.         mr2i /XS /Q filename address subject
  1058.         
  1059.     Finally, if uuencoding is preferred over MIME encoding, you can 
  1060.     add a "*" in front of the file name:
  1061.         
  1062.         mr2i /Q *filename address subject

  1064.     While this works nicely for the purposes of interfacing with PMFax,
  1065.     it has potential with any other third party tools and/or user 
  1066.     scripts that need to send encoded files around.

  1090.     Then press OK.  You might opt to create a FAX FOLDER and copy these
  1091.     message there and/or removing them from the inbox, but this is not
  1092.     necessary for this to work correctly.

  1094. o   Install now includes the file faxrcv.cmd for use with the filter
  1095.     and features documented above.  NOTE THAT fxrcv.exe, as supplied
  1096.     with PMFax, is expected to be somewhere in your PATH.  If not, the

  1105.     load.  This to try and counter the problem with the default being
  1106.     to KEEP messages on the server, new users not knowing to purge,
  1107.     and mailboxes becoming full.

  1109. o   New warning that is issued when you attach a file via uuencoding
  1110.     and where that attachment's last line starts with a "." length
  1111.     character.  This has proven to cause trouble with various 
  1112.     combinations of POP3 servers and email clients, so MR/2 ICE suggests
  1113.     using MIME in these cases.  Note that the odds of this happening
  1114.     are something like 1:72, so it does happen!
  1115.  
  1116. o   Sorting of inbox and outbox is consistent when new messages are added.

  1118. o   Creation of a new folder now inserts the new item in the proper sorted
  1119.     spot.

  1121. o   Crash:  when a new outgoing message was created, then deleted from
  1122.     the outbox before sent, MR/2 would still try to send and crash at

  1125. o   Crash: Some mailer liked to send BinHex with the entire section left
  1126.     padded with spaces.  I fixed both the code that crashed, then made

  1323. WARNING: I have totally reworked the attachment subsystem.  Not only
  1324. does this improve overall performance significantly, but it also
  1325. provides seamless MIME and BinHex (Binhex is detach only at this time).
  1326. HOWEVER, with any new code, there can be problems.  I am considering 
  1327. the attachment subsystem "in beta" ... just this mechanism.
  1328.  
  1329. I expect to release v1.1 on 08/01/96 with MIME support that includes
  1330. user-definable viewers, an improved CP translation table with added 
  1331. support for ISO-Latin-10 and KOI8-R (Russian) character sets.  In 
  1332. addition, a user will be able to select a specific Code Page 
  1333. translation for any message.
  1334.  
  1335. BIG NOTE:  The // command parameter, used in testing, should NOT be
  1336. used.  In fact, the program now warns you if it is used.  AND, in fact,
  1337. the // flag's function has been reversed.  Using //, at least for now,
  1338. will cause MR/2 ICE to revert (mostly) to the old "attachment text 
  1339. viewable in the message" mode.  Just as a precaution.
  1340.  
  1341. o   Progress with attachments.  Support for the basic MIME mechanism
  1342.     has been added.  MR/2 will now recognize and parse MIME message,
  1343.     displaying text sections and replacing "attachments" with markers
  1344.     that represent the attachment.  The Message->Detach function will
  1345.     now detach uuencode, MIME and BinHex attachments transparently.
  1346.     
  1347.     Attaching files also supports MIME messages.  The Message->Attach
  1348.     menu now is a conditional cascade with UUEncoding still being the
  1349.     default (plans to user-configure).  The sub menu lists other options,
  1350.     including MIME/base64.  BinHex outgoing is not yet supported.

  1352.     The Text option is an experiment, but I believe it will be useful.

  1370.     "permanently".  In other words, those using the DELDIR option in
  1371.     config.sys were having ALL deleted files "backed up".  This has

  1375.     For those of you that want to remain cautious at the expense of 
  1376.     speed,  I have added the command line option "/W" which will use
  1377.     the old delete method, in most cases.

  1379. o   New command line switch /Qfilename.  Will add the names file to the
  1380.     MR/2 ICE outbox and exit.  File is assumed to be a properly formed
  1381.     message file.  You can force MR/2 to attempt to send the message via
  1382.     use of the /XS flag.
  1383.  
  1384. o   New command line switch /Euser@domain.com.  Starts MR/2 ICE and 
  1385.     immediately invokes a new message to the address specified.  For use
  1386.     by a third-party address book program still in the works, but it 
  1387.     surely has other applications.
  1388.  
  1389. o   Command-line control of a running copy of MR/2 ICE.  The commands 
  1390.     above will actually cause an existing instance of MR/2, if found,
  1391.     to do the desired work.  I went the extra step of support this for
  1392.     multiple accounts, so specifying an account should talk to the right
  1393.     copy of MR/2 ICE.  So, using the /Q option to queue a file actually
  1394.     puts it in the outbox of a running copy, and proceeds to send it.
  1395.     Using the /E option causes a New Message header screen to pop to the 
  1396.     desktop from a running copy of ICE.  Also:
  1397.     
  1398.         /Qfile  - as described above
  1399.         
  1400.         /Euser@domain - as described above        
  1401.  
  1402.         /+  will restore and bring focus to a minimized/burried 
  1403.             copy of MR/2 ICE.

  1405.         /-  will minimize an existing, running copy of MR/2 ICE.

  1407.     Other commands can be added as the need arises.  I'm open for
  1408.     good suggestions!
  1409.     
  1410.     NOTE that if a running copy of ICE is not found, a new copy is
  1411.     started and the work is done.  In the case of the /Q option,
  1412.     MR/2 ICE will exit after queuing.  /XS can be used to force it to
  1413.     send, too.  The /E option will start a new copy of MR/2 if one is
  1414.     not running, and the application remains active.    
  1415.  
  1416. o   POP3 server interface ... when an invalid password is given, will
  1417.     prompt you *only if* the config password is blank.  Otherwise,
  1418.     it just reports the error in the status window.  This prevents the
  1419.     prompting from interfering with auto-fetch scripts and procedures
  1420.     where the ISP might time out.
  1421.  
  1422. o   Using /S could end up racing the send thread with nothing for it to
  1423.     do, under certain conditions.  Fixed.
  1424.     
  1425. o   Closing Editor would "close" the app completely.  This was actually a

  1473. o   PreSend filters.  You can define a set of filter match criteria. Each
  1474.     message to be sent (queued messages) pass through this filter, and if
  1475.     found to match, can be passed through a REXX script.  Most other

  1477.     After the filter(s) is/are executed, the message is sent.

  1479.     This was implemented specifically for PGP signing and encrypting.

  1748.     sending mail.  I was using silly-size tiny buffers.  Not any more!

  1918.     limitation.  In fact, I also discovered that 512 bytes IS NOT 
  1919.     the limitation of the OS/2 Edit field as I had thought.

  1921.     MR/2 ICE now supports address collections of up to 1024 characters
  1922.     per field.  That's roughly 30 well-formed (full, with real names)
  1923.     addresses.  By using the To and CC fields, 60 addresses can easily
  1924.     be handled; double that if real name comments are not important.
  1925.     This is the way it will remain for now, with the option of using a 
  1926.     distribution list available for longer lists (but the distribution 
  1927.     list is not displayed in the message).

  2251.     formated printing.  It turned out to be a driver-specific problem,
  2252.     which I knew before but couldn't place any logic behind it.  I have
  2253.     an office HPIII and HP4Plus that work perfectly.  Others had HP's 
  2254.     that wouldn't.  It all depended on how the driver handled a 
  2255.     seldom-used FORM specification.  This parameter is usually ignored, 
  2256.     so it is now removed and I've managed to print to my collection of
  2257.     dot-matrix test drivers.

  2259.     IF YOU STILL have a problem with formated printing, please let me
  2260.     know.  I'd like to know the version of WARP you are using (I've
  2261.     found that this matters in this case), the printer driver used, and
  2262.     and trap address and source.  I NEED ONLY the address as in 
  2263.     "generated an access violation at xxxxxxxx" and the module (MR2I.EXE,
  2264.     PMSPL.DLL, etc).

  2266. o   Other printer additions: settings.  The "Other port" option for draft
  2267.     printing has been enabled.  You can now specify any weirdness you want,
  2268.     although error checking is at a bare minimum.  Specified file/device
  2269.     is opened in "append text" mode.

  2310. this month, and it is important to do so.  This will undoubtable mean

  2312. list has been growing at a fast pace, and some long-time entries have
  2313. not yet been addressed.

  2315. Releasing a v1.0 is a mere formality to me ... work will not cease, and
  2316. I will continue to upgrade the product quickly.  I'm pushing it with
  2317. once-a-week releases, I will probably drop back to every 2 weeks, with

  2320. I anxiously await the release of the two major competitors' updates.  Right
  2321. now they have a bit of an advantage, as my work is out in the open and

  2324. the key ... I do not believe that the competitors can maintain the pace
  2325. that I intend to keep.  Only one has the resources, but they also have the

  2342. o   Replies crashing on send from folders AND navigation being disabled
  2343.     upon incoming mail.  This was a tricky one to fix, but I believe it's
  2344.     reliable now.  When a message was being copied/moved to a folder
  2345.     (including the copies done by incoming filters), the entire folder
  2346.     index was reloaded, invalidating the previously loaded memory image
  2347.     of any one that was open.  Fixed.

  2349. o   Ah.  I have dusted off my assembler books.  MR/2 ICE now includes 
  2350.     two small assembler routines for manipulating message contents.  
  2351.     This code was applied to some new areas, so existing code will not 
  2352.     increase in speed.  However, I see many places where things can be 
  2353.     made snappier with some assembler applied.  I will start to do this 
  2354.     over time, probably more realistically AFTER v1.0.  I once wrote a 
  2355.     database code generator and report writer (under CTOS/BTOS)  that 
  2356.     blew away all the competition w/regards to speed (and features, too 
  2357.     :).  I accredited the speed to a small core set of assembler 
  2358.     helpers.  I will apply the same technology to MR/2 ICE.

  2375.     message so as not to invoke unneeded panic and fixed it so that the 
  2376.     same actions will not lose messages.  NOTE that I have also removed 
  2377.     a "cleanup by purging old messages" loop that may result in dupes.  
  2378.     Maybe.  Better this than lost data, IMO.

  2380. o   Oh, yes!  Almost forgot (Cheryl :-).  I added persistence when 
  2381.     dropping a font on the INBOX.  If this works OK, I'll add

  2384.     most w/regards to non CP850 fonts that will be fixed next release.

  2386. o   I have added some code to Filters that enables a REXX script to be 
  2387.     executed upon a filter match.  This is preliminary and spawns a 
  2388.     command shell for now, until I rework it.  I also have an example 
  2389.     script that I will use to maintain, over time, an automated mailing 
  2390.     list.  The file is provided as maillist.ccc ... you should copy
  2391.     this to a .cmd file.  I will only update the .ccc file, so that 
  2392.     overwriting any modifications you may make will be avoided.  To 
  2393.     invoke this file at this time.  I use this as so:

  2413. 1.  The movement between open folders issue was brought to my attention
  2414.     again just now.  This, after a bit of a rough discussion on Usenet
  2415.     not long ago.  As I explained that I didn't, personally, like PM Mail's
  2416.     setup for folders, I remembered another gadget I had coded to help here.
  2417.     The Windows menu.  Has anyone ever looked at this with a bunch of 
  2418.     windows/folders open?  You should!  It's a quick and dirty index into
  2419.     almost any open and accessible MR/2 Window.  The same menu is on the
  2420.     main notebook as well as each message window.  Editor windows are not
  2421.     listed, but are on my todo's.  Just a subtle "fun fact".

  2423. 2.  Installation over existing setups causes constant concerns.  And 
  2424.     questions.  I have built the ZIP files so that the risk of overwriting
  2425.     user-modified files is slim.  So, USUALLY, it is safe to simply unzip
  2426.     a new distribution set over an existing setup.  I WILL RECCOMMEND, as
  2427.     always, to backup the MR/2 ICE base directory, as a precaution.  This
  2428.     also gives you protection against a newly introduced bug that might
  2429.     render your mail system unworkable.

  2612.     new and messes with the heart of my email delivery engine.  It still 
  2613.     has worked flawlessly here.  The Filter Maintenance form gives away 
  2614.     many of my ideas, and there were even some I believe to be original!  
  2615.     It all starts under the Utility menu.

  2617.     There are many areas of the Filter form that are disabled, as the
  2618.     code to support them is not there yet.  What you have at this time is
  2619.     a pick of simple or freeform search criteria.  You can copy/move a
  2620.     matching messages into a specific folder, if desired.  You can then
  2621.     choose to keep the message in the inbox or delete it from the inbox.
  2622.     If no folder is specified, and you delete the message, it is the
  2623.     same as "killing" it.

  2625.     Simple searches let you pick the area(s) to test, and a simple keyword
  2626.     or phrase (multiple words inside double quotes!).  Boolean symbols are
  2627.     allowed, but this mode is meant for users having simple search needs.

  2629.     Freeform searches follow the syntax spelled out for text searches, 
  2630.     below (see version L).  This allows for very complex search criteria 
  2631.     to be specified.  For example, it is possible to test a user-defined

  2906.     circumstances, the internal start counter would get corrupt and

  3063.     place/format.  All the info is there, but the SIZE of the message 
  3064.     isn't where MR/2 expect it.  So, it "defaulted" to 96K.  When this 
  3065.     happens, large message would cause trouble.  I now have beefed up 
  3066.     the size parsing and I think I've got all the bases covered now.
  3067.  
  3068. o   Also saw some extra work being done by MR/2 ICE, because of the 
  3069.     buffer size I chose.  By increasing my buffer size internally by one 
  3070.     character, I've cut down the number of packets transfered on some 
  3071.     system ... by half! My bet is that the size issue is common
  3072.  
  3073. o   POP3 receive ... closing of messages invoked a cleanup filter
  3074.     that was horribly inefficient.  I spent a short time on this and sped
  3075.     it up tremendously, most noticable with large (uuencoded) messages.
  3076.  
  3077. o   Persisitence of POP3 counter on failure ... MR/2 ICE will now save
  3078.     the last-read counter on each successful read.  Previously, on error,
  3079.     MR/2 would reread many successfully improted messages when restarted.

  3082.     no code was behind it).  Rebuilding a folder index no longer does

  3101.     mentioned above.  The Y/N flag is now shown on the Folder List, and
  3102.     I'll eventually allow toggling of this flag from there.

  3104. o   Multiple Account improvements.  While not completely finished, things
  3105.     work a little bit better.  For example, any NEW account created will
  3106.     remember and enforce the specified password.  Folder lists are now
  3107.     correctly modified and displayed as accounts are changed.  Accounts
  3108.     that already exist still have a password that matches the user name;
  3109.     I'll allow you to change this next time.

  3111. o   I almost forgot ... I added some code to the logic that is triggered
  3112.     the very first time you run MR/2 ICE.  The program invokes the
  3113.     settings notebook, then immediately explains the common Cirrus Logic
  3114.     video bug that exists, and asks you if you see the settings tabs.
  3115.     If you respond that the BUG does indeed exists, MR/2 ICE sets up
  3116.     a "forced /F9" command line flag.  You can override this with a
  3117.     command line switch, and I'll have this option on the settings form
  3118.     next version.

  3121.     files do not exist on your system, MR/2 will now pop up a text

  3204.     has been a minimal of testing, tho.  I personally created a couple 
  3205.     of small groups that worked well.  I also created three larger 
  3206.     groups, all external-file based.  One contained all of my original 
  3207.     beta testers, one contained all users who have registered to-date, 
  3208.     and the third combined these two by "including" the two lists by 
  3209.     tag.
  3210.     
  3211.     I have tried to come up with a very flexible group-addressing scheme,
  3212.     but in doing so, may have made it look a little more complex than
  3213.     it really is.  Groups can be simple lists of individual addresses,
  3214.     all maintained online.  Groups can also be mixes of individual
  3215.     addresses, address book tags, other group tags, and "address from
  3216.     file" entries.  I have included code to prevent circular references,
  3217.     but the error messages/warnings are weak at this time.
  3218.     
  3219.     An address file is simply a text file (I started using the file
  3220.     extension ".lst") that contains one address entry per line.  Great
  3221.     for those of us who keep lists generated from "other" programs.
  3222.     Oh, yes, these entries can also be address book tags, group tags or
  3223.     other file references.

  3225.     THE one thing sorely missing is a "pick group" button on the header
  3226.     entry form and the Pick Group button on address entry needs to be
  3227.     hooked to the same code.  Next release.  Groups WILL popup in the
  3228.     RMB menu, if the appropriate checkbox is marked.

  3230.     As a short example, you could easily create a group that references
  3231.     three other groups.  Each of these groups could reference whatever
  3232.     they needed to ... more groups, addresses from a file, address
  3233.     book entries and/or individual addresses.

  3236.     feel free to give me your ideas :).

  3238.     Oh, one last note.  Group address entries can be disabled.  To toggle

  3243.     This became acutely apparent when I tried to send a UUEncoded file
  3244.     that was about 63K.  The problem was the import into the MLE ... I

  3246.     to the MLE's chop-point.  Fixed.

  3248. o   Font selection ... for some silly reason I was showing only BitMap
  3249.     fonts.  That will teach me to steal code from sample programs

  3253.     addresses and other tokens that were supposed to have them.  I believe
  3254.     I fixed this, but it warrants some time-testing.

  3257.     They're fixed, at least as far as speed goes.  I was able to get 
  3258.     some of Mike's time (Mike is Secant's OS/2 Control "guru" :) to look

  3260.     we're operating at blinding speeds.  You should be able to turn these
  3261.     on without noticably effecting performance.  NOTE that for MAXIMUM
  3262.     performance, they should still be off ... even faster, creating
  3263.     20 tiny windows still takes time.

  3265. o   Crashes on program load.  Some of these (all?  Too wishfull a thought,
  3266.     I guess) were caused by my changes to the way the printing system
  3267.     is initialized.  If your system had NO OS/2 PRINTER DRIVER installed
  3268.     you would probably crash.  If you had a driver with an internal name
  3269.     that did not have a '.' as part of it ... sme thing [My home system
  3270.     had an old IBMNULL with no '.', and when I switched to that printer,
  3271.     crash!].  These have been fixed, although printing itself is still 
  3272.     being worked on.

  3274. o   NOTE:  an early report of Object Desktop's Tabbed Launchpad crashing
  3275.     ICE on load.  This started with a recent update/path to their v1.02
  3276.     level.  Running ICE with the /T switch worked-around this, as did
  3277.     not invoking the tabbed launchpad.  They've been notified, write to
  3278.     them if this incoveniences you.

  3280. o   Thesaurus and Speller limits were still in a few obscure places

  3313.     barring a few bugs, and can be enabled by running with the "//" flag 
  3314.     on the command line.  This is just so those interested can comment 
  3315.     on the overall layout.  It is NOT meant for real use, and may change 
  3316.     before finalized.  SENDS do not recognize Groups yet.

  3318.     In general, groups will allow for lists of raw addresses, aliases, 
  3319.     other groups and/or lists of all of these contained within an

  3459. added some code to try and help.  Ironically, since doing this, I have
  3460. been unable to make it crash.  I may have fixed it while making other  
  3461. code changes, but only time will tell.  Reporting crash addresses is

  3465. they'd like to share?  I've had many requests for conversion tools, and
  3466. I'd certainly like to supply them, and I know I can.  Time is the 
  3467. problem.  I can see how to convert PMMail's stuff to my format, but if 
  3468. I stop to do this, I don't get to add important features to my own work.
  3469. Any REXX guru's want to show there stuff off and get some recognition?
  3470. Of particular interest are scripts that would convert address books and
  3471. folders from PM Mail, Post Road Mailer, Ultimail/LaMail and things like
  3472. PINE.

  3545. until I release v1.0.

  3547. o   Removed the Edit signature file menu item.  I added much code to 
  3548.     this feature, but it isn't yet workable (made a bigger monster
  3549.     than originally planned out of the editor).  This will be readded

  3553.     for "mr2i.sig".  Note that the sig file itself is just a very simple

  3557.     selectable reply templates are you want, each with custom

  3680. o   Address book tags now expand!  For example, you can attach a tag of
  3681.     "nk" to my default name in the address book (if you are a new user,
  3682.     the starter address book lists me).  When creating a new message or
  3683.     sending a reply, you can enter "ice" as a user name and it will expand
  3684.     to my full address upon exiting the field.

  3686. o   Major notebook tabs now default to a "hidden" state.  Option on the
  3687.     main index menu enables tabs.  Since "news" was not yet functional,
  3688.     these tabs simply wasted screen area.  Tabs were also reduced in size,
  3689.     for when they *do* display.
